Great series of stories from CNN by reporter Ben Wedeman
Current mood: Happy CNN has started broadcasting a series of stories based on our first show at the Syndrome in West Jerusalem. We packed the club there and that was our test show which turned out to be phenomenal ... Everyone loves comedy! Our Wednesday show is selling out fast and furious, and Israeli Television Channel 10 has set up a special broadcast segment on us for later int he week which reaches millions of Israelis AND Palestinians ... I'm still trying to get through to the Palestinian press. It is true, communication between Israel and the territories is difficult. Although I know I can travel there, as long as it is within the rules of Israeli immigration (3 month visa no more) -- some Palestinians who have been living on the edge don't have citizenship in Israel or Palestine so they use the tourist visa (3 months) to get in to stay with their families and then don't leave ... and now the Israelis are enforcing the immigration laws -- I guess we should have expected that. A tourist visa is not the answer to family reunification. The Palestinian and Israeli governments should get together and figure out how to accomodate those who are married but don't have the proper immigration papers. It's not just the Israelis. It's almost impossible to get a residency status from the Palestinians, but the Palestinians don't care so people can come and go through their system. As a result, the burden and the blame has fallen on the Israelis. Well, maybe a little human interaction, good faith and respect can change all that. |
