Update From Europe
I'm on my way from Paris to London on the glorious Eurostar (Chunnel) train. Roaring past the snowy French countryside at 190 miles an hour. It's just two and a half hours from central Paris to Waterloo. I'm here for a CNN documentary project that's sending me to London, Paris, Belfast, Israel and the West Bank, and either Jordan or Pakistan. Not a bad gig! In Paris, I had a drink with my friend, Ghassan Salame, the former Minister of Culture and international negotiator for Lebanon. I met him in Beirut a few years ago when I was working on my film for Frontline about Hezbollah. Ghassan was the ONLY Lebanese government official willing to talk on the record about the subject. He now teaches in Paris and also works some for the UN. (He was the UN #2 in Baghdad when their compound was bombed and Sergio de Mellor killed. Ghassan was one of the people trying to dig him out and was on the phone with Mellor while he was dying.) Ghassan - who has been involved with the Palestinian struggle for statehood for many years - has one of the world's great rolodexes and has offered to help. It is much appreciated. In London I've got meetings with various people who can help Comedy for PeaceTM: Omid Djalili (the man with the toothy twinkle on the face bar above and who's with Whoopi Goldberg in the sample reel) and I are getting together. Omid is a huge star in the UK and has done many movies, including "The Mummy" and the upcoming "Modigliani" with Andy Garcia and "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" with Gwyneth Paltrow. (Check Omid out at: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0229084/) He was the first celebrity comic to agree to perform with Ray and Aaron and is happy to travel to both sides of the conflict. He's also going to introduce me to other British comics, such as Dame Edna. (Think "she" can play Gaza? Hmmm...) Omid is a Brit of Iranian origin and a Bahai. I'll also be seeing various folks who can help get English fundraising underway. I don't have appointments with anyone in Belfast but am going to see what the possibilities are for organizing a future Comedy for PeaceTM show there. |
